Welcome back, friends. Whether you’ve been with me for awhile, or are new to this space, welcome. If you missed my August newsletter- visit Tending the Greenery of the Heart- as it offers practices, practices, and reflections from Leo fire, the chakras of Manipura and the tending of Anahata, the heart. That flame and tenderness remain my compass as we step into mid-August, walking together through transition.
If you’re simply here for weekly offering links, scroll below for details or click here for Garden yoga @ Humberside, online Weekday Warrior, 6 week Nourishment series in SE PDX (starts this Wednesday!!) and Yoga therapy. For those who wish to linger- a read from heart to root, root to heart.
Heart & Root: An Inherent Connection
This week’s yoga practices will center on the relationship between the 1st and 4th chakras—the root and the heart.
- Muladhara (Root): the right to be, to feel safe, to belong.
- Anahata (Heart): the right to love, and to be loved.
As summer wanes, Leo season reminds us to shine brightly yet humbly, while Virgo season—just ahead—invites us to ground, organize, and begin again. The bridge between these energies is the heart returning to root, love resting in safety.
A Practice of Homecoming
Offer a hand to your heart.
Breath in deeply.
Breath out completely.
Take a few rounds without force. Gentle focus. In and Out.
Eyes closed or open, take your time, your pace.
Your heart may not always feel whole, but perhaps it can be open. Loving what is. Even when its hard. These small moments matter.
In my own practice this week, I returned to metta—loving-kindness. Offering compassion inward first, then outward. In Ayurveda, the heart and the root are deeply entwined: safety makes love possible, and love nourishes safety.
As The Courage Practice reminds us: “You don’t actually crave control, you crave the safety that makes letting go possible.”
This is the heart’s wisdom: refuge, joy, longing, and connection all held in the same space.
Honoring Transition
For many, mid-August is a time of shift—back to school, final bursts of summer, the whisper of autumn on the horizon. In my own life, it has meant a return from travel, both grief and sweetness surfacing in memories of my late father, and gratitude for the beauty that still surrounds me: desert mountains, cold creek plunges, the rustle of leaves. Tending to small pings of guilt, of messages from my protector parts that still need more space, more love, that can send piercing thoughts, messages of not deserving, from conditioning and survival of past.
Yoga practice invites us not just into shapes with breath on the mat, but to meet life honestly—to be within the doing. Its intention in the moment. To pause, digest, and balance energies when the pace of life frays the edges.
One of my clients reflected this week on overwhelm in which we uncovered a need to express while also releasing repressed fire and nourishing the heart. To be in integrity and truthfulness with the goal of balance as compass. We each live our seasons, meet our demands, and within this is the ongoing need to create space, to acknowledge, let whatever arises run its course- then to let go so that restoration may enter. This allowing is the heart- and invitation to return to root.
Integrity, Nourishment, and Humility
I was recently called out by a dear peer for sharing in my nourishment in the form of food- but with neglecting care alongside so many that face starvation across borders and within our own. It struck me at the root. We get the opportunity to practice yes, and. Yes, nourish within. And from that place share of the injustices from places, spaces, humanity and suffering that is in lack. A reminder that integrity is not about being perfect, but about continuously refining—caring deeply about intent and impact.
Sometimes we rupture, and then we work toward repair. We live with passion and compassion, discerning where our light can serve, to replenish when feeling depletion. In the season of Leo, humility and expression walk hand in hand.
We are asked to be in integrity, to respond in the moment. To foster the relationship, notice our withdraw and check into our protector parts, our wounded parts. And from our kindest, most loving and wise place extend Matt Kahn's wisdom
I deserve more love, not less.
You deserve more love, not less.
We deserve more love, not less.
May we all bring forward more love, not less.

Tending the Greenery of the Heart
As the Nourishment Series begins, summer winds down, and the new moon in Virgo approaches (August 23), may we root deeply while tending the heart’s fire. Transition asks much of us, but also offers renewal. More rooting on the horizon. Deeper into the root chakra as fall approaches.
May you continue to honor and live into your shine, your fire, your center.
In service to the injustice, with encouragement from the heart.
Remembering that you are exactly where you need to be. You are right on time.
"May you have gratitude for the meaningful moments wherever you find them. For even if their impact is not immediately noticeable, with time, you might just find you are still creating rhythms that matter." – Morgan Harper Nichols
In radiance & rest,
With love & light,
Maya
