Tending Home in Times of Uncertainty: On Trust, Steadiness, and the Middle Path
“To trust is to surrender to your rightful place in the world, same as unshakeable trees bending to shifting winds.” Cherresson & Rice
Good morning yogis and dear friends 🌿
Feeling especially grateful this Monday morning to have some quiet space in that luminous sattvic hour after practice—before the day rushes forward into emails, responsibilities, and the many ways we show up in service to one another through connection, care, and wholehearted practice.
Soundscape for this read:
Mid-May finds us here:
between spring and summer,
between effort and rest,
between uncertainty and trust.
We’ve just moved through the Taurus New Moon—a time that can feel grounding and clarifying, but also vulnerable. New moons often invite us inward before they ask us forward.
This season has carried moments of sweetness and remembrance for me. The anniversary of my late father’s passing came forward alongside Mother’s Day—a tender reminder of those who carried us, loved us imperfectly, struggled deeply, created beauty anyway, and shaped our becoming through both grit and tenderness.
At the same time, the vibrant momentum of spring is undeniably alive. Gardens are growing. Calendars are filling. The sparks of possibility are everywhere.
And yet… so are the realities of our world.
Mental Health Awareness Month arrives amidst collective strain—economic uncertainty, rising costs, public health challenges, overstimulation, burnout, and the many fires burning within and around us. There’s grief, fear, anger, exhaustion. But also resilience. Community. People continuing to show up for one another.
“Two things can be true at the same time. The world is broken—so many fires burning at once. But the world is also full of love—people helping people, those teaching others within the storm, and those who risk themselves daily to be a source of light. We need to make our home somewhere in the middle.”
— Ullie-Kaye
That middle place feels important right now.
Not bypassing reality.
Not collapsing into fear.
But tending ourselves with steadiness and discernment.
In yoga and the Traditional Chinese Medicine traditions alike, late spring asks us to work skillfully with the movement from wood into fire. We cultivate resilience and adaptability like bamboo—strong enough to hold shape, flexible enough to bend with changing winds.
As the energy of summer begins to build, the practice becomes less about doing everything and more about directing our life force wisely.
What feels real?
What feels steady?
What is worthy of your energy?
The Taurus archetype reminds us to slow down enough to listen. Ruled by Venus, it calls us toward love, groundedness, security, nourishment, healthy expression, and tending the home we’ve created within ourselves.
As Gemini season beacons us- we will focusing more on the vayus—the directional winds of prana—as energy becomes more active this time of year. How do we channel that movement sustainably? How do we support the nervous system while continuing to grow?
One breath.
One practice.
One connection at a time.
I’ve been pouring heart into the communities I’m serving both online and at Heart Spring Health in Sellwood, and it’s been deeply meaningful to witness people showing up exactly as they are. These smaller therapeutic spaces have become places to regulate, strengthen, soften, laugh, reconnect, and remember we do not have to navigate life alone.
And truthfully, accessibility matters right now.
Gas prices are high. Schedules are full. Many people are carrying a lot.
Part of why I’ve loved being part of Heart Spring is that it offers affordable and community-centered wellness support—yoga, Pilates, sound baths, nervous system care, functional movement, chair-based practices, support for chronic pain and hypermobility, and so much more—all within a genuinely caring environment here in Southeast Portland.
If you or someone in your world is needing steadiness, support, or a place to land, I’d love to welcome you.
Outdoor yoga gatherings are also on the horizon for June, which feels especially nourishing as the light continues to return ☀️
May we continue tending what’s truly growing.
May we soften what no longer needs gripping.
May we trust ourselves enough to bend with the winds without losing our roots.
In bloom, steadiness, and wholehearted practice,
Maya
